the Grant
Travel Suit

One of our favorite photographers and friends and
Creative Director of Corduroy
magazine, Peter Ash Lee’s
penchant for world travel is only matched by his appreciation
of a well-styled suit. Here, the two come together in a series
of exclusive self-portraits featuring our Grant Travel Suit
made with lightweight, wrinkle-free wool fabric from
renowned Italian textile house Loro Piana.

This is the first time you sat down to take your own photograph professionally. What did you want to represent about yourself?
I didn’t want to overthink it; I’m used to taking photos of other people, but when it came time to turning the camera on myself, I tried to just be as natural and real as possible, finding ways to capture the outfit in my studio space.
Wearing a suit to work isn’t exactly a requirement for you, but you like to wear them. What do you look for in one, and where do you go in it?
I look for a suit that’s easy and versatile—one that I can dress up when needed or just wear with jeans and a T-shirt. That’s why I love this suit. Its wrinkle-free wool is great for travel, and it’s the perfect balance between formal and relaxed.
Have you ever worn a suit for a shoot when you’ve been behind the camera...other than for this project?
I’ve definitely worn suits on many shoots, usually with a T-shirt underneath or a relaxed button-down shirt. Lately I’ve been wearing a lot of structured suit pants with just a loose tee on top.
What photograph are you most proud to have taken?
The experience of making the pictures usually remains with me more than the resulting photograph. I remember working with actress Vanessa Redgrave—I had brought these tiny daisies for her and asked her if she’d put them in her hair for me, and she said, “Well, if I were to wear these, I’d put them right here.” She then placed them in the back of her short cropped hair. That was years ago, and I’ve been trying to sneak flowers into as many of my shoots as possible ever since.
What has been your favorite journey?
One of my favorite journeys was a backpacking trip through India in 2014. We started in Mumbai and traveled around to multiple cities. We rode around on motorbikes in rain showers in Goa, saw a camel fair in Pushkar, and slept on the desert floor in Rajasthan. It was an amazing trip full of adventure and delicious food.
Where would you like to go next?
I’d love to go to Yellowstone National Park to see the Grand Prismatic Spring. The colors look insanely beautiful.
